So who the hell is Sally Carey anyway?!
Jan 30, 2024I grew up in a family business from the age of 4; perched on a stool, peddling $1 scratchies in our family's bustling newsagency. Those formative years etched the essence of retail and old-school customer service into my core. From school holidays to Saturdays, I immersed myself in the world of commerce, eventually managing four shops for my father after the untimely passing of my mother when I was just 17. A pivotal moment came when my father shared a profound truth – "Life is too short." This revelation sparked a decision that would redefine my path.
With courage in our hearts, we bid farewell to our businesses and leapt into the realm of franchise food ventures, thinking the grass might be greener. Little did we know, the journey would be riddled with tough lessons.
The dreamy allure of franchises quickly dissipated, overshadowed by the challenges of navigating soaring rents in bustling shopping centres. It was a convoluted maze of bureaucratic red tape and questionable practices. Yet, this experience, though arduous, bestowed invaluable lessons in numbers, and systems, and the realisation that I could chart my own course more effectively.
The suffocating confines of franchising reached a tipping point, coinciding with a weekend viewing of the movie "Chef." The tale of Carl Casper's liberation from a controlling restaurant owner to embark on a food truck journey resonated deeply. Inspired, I committed to a new pursuit – my very own food truck. Eight months of meticulous planning, from concept to construction, culminated in the birth of The Feel Good Foodie on February 6, 2017 – a moment that blended exhilaration with the nerve-wracking anticipation of a new venture.
Now, fast forward eight years, and we're still here, deeply enamoured with the food truck life, yet eager to elevate industry standards. The journey has granted me the freedom to set my own hours, relish life with my family, and appreciate the true value of business freedom, a legacy from my parents.
Recognising the wealth of insights amassed along this odyssey, Food Truck Academy was born. It emerged from a burning desire to assist others and propel the industry to new heights and teach people “How to start a food truck business” the right way.
My mission: to challenge perceptions about food trucks and foster innovation within the community.
While the excitement around food trucks is palpable, some execute their ventures poorly, staining our collective reputation. Fuelled by a passion to redefine how food trucks are perceived, and driven by a deluge of enquiries from aspiring entrepreneurs seeking guidance, I invested time and resources into creating an online platform.
Food Truck Academy stands as a testament to sharing my expertise, turning dreams into reality, and elevating the food truck industry.
